Sax Clarinet Flute
Why are some instruments (trumpet, clarinet, sax) transposing, and some (violin, flute, trombone) are not?
It depends on the instrument type. Transposing brass instruments (trumpet, horn) do so for historical reasons. Before the invention of valves, natural trumpets and horns were used, which had a limited set of notes. It was necessary for a player to own multiple instruments in different keys (ex. trumpet in C, F, Eb, etc.) and composers would specify which one should be played in a piece. When valves were invented, the instruments could play the full chromatic scale, and in bands (where most young people play trumpet now) the Bb trumpet and F horn were adopted as standards because of their sound– coincidentally, they transpose.
Woodwind instruments are usually transposing so that a musician can pick up any of the instruments from a family (ex. clarinet family, sax family) and finger them the same, but create sounds in a different range. For example, a player fingers a G the same on a Soprano Sax as they do on a Baritone Sax, but entirely different notes come out of the bell. In the clarinet family, differently transposing clarinets are used to achieve different sounds– for example, the Eb clarinet is much harsher sounding than the standard Bb clarinet.
