I have this box of brass … What size is it?
I was bagging my used 12ga shells and took this case i found a while ago. 4.8 cm ISH long .8 mm wide at the neck (lil distorted) at the end with 946 and on the other side at the bottom is 80. Does anyone know what gun belongs to this shell? I'm pretty sure it is a military housing. I remember saying SUMTHING about it, now that I think.
Given your measurements are slightly outside, especially in the neck, a quick check of "Cartridges of the World, suggests IHMSA Savage 300 and 300 as the most likely candidates for caliber. The 946 in the headstamp indicates a factory in China. 80 may be the year of manufacture.

Understanding of brass, bronze and Patina
Brass
Brass is an alloy of yellow butter that has been manufactured for thousands of years throughout the world. Brass uses vary from the percentages of zinc and copper and other metals that have been added the alloy to perform specific properties, but include cartridges for weapons, pipes, decorative accents in homes, Musical Instruments and household ornaments. The color of the alloy will also vary depending on the amount of zinc: brass get a lighter color with extra zinc, and may reach a stage of color pale yellow.
Brass base is approximately 67% copper and zinc 33%, which is stronger and more durable than copper, though not as heavy metals such as steel. Zinc Alloys with starting much less turn a reddish color and are sometimes called red brass. Other metals are sometimes added to the alloy including lead to more viable bronze by the machine and resist corrosion, and iron to make metal harder and easier to forge.
Many terms are used to speak of bronze as "cartridge bronze "and" Dutch brass, "but in the U.S., the brass is assigned a number under the Unified Numbering System. All br About the Author
