Soprano School Recorder

Any Elementary School (K-5th grade) Music Teachers with suggestions?
How do you prepare a music lesson for your class and what grade is it? Any suggestions on how (an activity) to teach a musical concept like melody, rhythm, dynamics, etc?
I’m good with the recorder and have some basic piano skills. What kinds of songs are appropriate for their age level to teach them to play on the recorder (soprano baroque-English fingering) or even the piano?
I am not a teacher but am doing this for an education class.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Well, if it is a 3 yr old student, I start with teaching basic note values. Quarter (1), half (2), whole(4), etc. then I put them into basic rythm exercises. This teaches them counting first before playing. then I teach them about basic time signatures, 4/4 and 3/4 ((4/4)=4 beats a measure, quarter note equals 1. (3/4)=3 beats per mesure, quarter note equals 1.) Even if they are older and can already count the basic 1-2-3-4, I still teach them note value and time signature, put them together in exercises and have them clap it. quarter-half-quarter-whole (1,1-2,1,1-2-3-4). After they grasp counting and claping, I teach them basic note reading. Starting with Middle C (it’s the only C that looks the way it does) and go from there. Starting with the Treble Clef Staff first Middle C is a line note then continuing up each line E-G-B-D-F (Every Good Boy Does Fine) then move on to the space notes which spell F-A-C-E. When they get that I give them a basic melody or move on to the first song in the book. Usually for little kids it’s very easy. A melody line can go: Mid.C-E-D-G-D-C-D-E-F-C. I then make them play it and depending on how quick they pick it up, we either move on to the next lesson or stop and focus on the parts they aren’t understanding. Trying to find approiate songs are difficult since parents can be sensitive, so I just use Alfred’s Piano Lesson and Theory Books and MFLM books. They already have designated song that co-inside with the Theory or activity books (this help reinforce the lesson(s) we’ve just learned) and then parents can’t complain because it’s already in the book. Sometimes I get the occasional student whose religion doesn’t allow them to play x-mas or holiday like songs and in that case we just skip it. I’d be more than happy to help you in your research. Please feel free to email me anytime at the_mooneyhams@yahoo.com I hope this helps you out and I’ve answered the questions correctly. It’s been a pleasure. Keep in mind this method is for piano students. I use a very similar method when teaching other instruments and voice but not the exact same due to the fact it may only be a melody instrument like the flute, or recorder and not a harmony instrument like the piano or guitar.
