Sax Saxophone Reeds
Why is my saxophone chirping on notes it didn’t before?
I’ve played for 5 years and have had my Alto Sax for 2. One day I noticed it was making quiet squeaks every time I changed notes, especially in the middle range. I haven’t changed my mouthpiece, reeds, anything. Could it be a leaky pad? Ahhg!
It can be a leaky pad, a broken spring, or a key out of adjustment.
I would try fixing YOU first and then taking it to a shop. My music professors always tell me “fix the kid, then fix the instrument.” Is your embouchure correct? Do you have the “muscular lip” and “pointed chin”? Is your reed old, or does it need adjustment? Are you putting in the right air speed and breath support?
You also may need to upgrade your reeds. If your embouchure is stronger and you haven’t changed reed brands/strength since you started playing, it’s time to change!
If you’re doing everything well, get a leak light and check for leaks. Examine your springs, see if they’re allowing the keys to remain in their adequate spots. Also, check your key adjustments. Or just take it to a repairman for a once-over.
